Advanced English Typing Test

Ready for a harder test? This advanced test uses the 1000 most common English words, so you will see longer and less familiar words than in the normal typing test. Type as many as you can in one minute to see your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.

Because the words are less predictable, your score here is closer to how fast you type real text such as emails and reports.

Too hard? Go back to the normal English typing test. Want to practise first? See the list of the top 1000 words.

Why take the advanced test?

In the normal test the same 200 words come back again and again, and after a while your fingers learn them. With 1000 words that is much harder, so the advanced test shows whether your speed holds up on words you do not type every day.

How the typing test works

  1. Click the input box and start typing the highlighted word. The timer starts with your first key.
  2. Press the space bar to move to the next word. Correct words turn green, wrong words turn red.
  3. When the time is up, your result appears. Press the restart button to try again with new words.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the normal and advanced test?
The normal test uses the 200 most common English words. The advanced test uses the top 1000, so the words are longer and less predictable. Most people score a little lower on the advanced test.
Are advanced results ranked separately?
Yes. The advanced test has its own rankings, so you are only compared with people who took the same test.
How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
What is accuracy?
Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
