Arabic Typing Test
اختبار سرعة الكتابة باللغة العربية
Check how fast you can type in Arabic. The test shows 200 common Modern Standard Arabic words, such as في، من، على and هذا, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
Arabic typing is useful well beyond the Arab world. Students of Arabic, people preparing for work in the Gulf and anyone who writes Arabic text for study or business can use this test to measure and improve their speed.
The Arabic keyboard
The most widely used layout is Arabic (101), which comes with Windows, macOS and phones. Arabic letters connect and change shape depending on their position in a word, but you only type each letter once: the computer picks the right shape for you.
On Windows 11, add Arabic under Settings → Time & language → Language & region and switch keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The words have no diacritics (tashkeel), but every letter must be right:
- The hamza forms أ، إ and آ are separate letters from ا. On the Arabic (101) layout they are on Shift.
- ة (taa marbuta) and ه (haa) look alike at the end of a word, as in مدينة.
- ى (alif maqsura) and ي (yaa): على ends in alif maqsura.
- لا has its own key on most Arabic keyboards.
Tips to type Arabic faster
- Learn where the letters are with your fingers on the home row instead of looking down.
- Practise the short, frequent words first. Words like في، من and على appear in almost every sentence.
- Use Text Practice or a Custom Typing Test to practise full Arabic sentences.
How the typing test works

- When the time is up, your result appears. Press the restart button to try again with new words.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to type harakat (diacritics)?
- No. The words are written without harakat, the way most Arabic is typed every day. Just type the letters.
- Which Arabic keyboard layout should I use?
- Arabic (101) is the most common layout and a good default. The test works with any layout that types standard Arabic characters.
- Why does the text go from right to left?
- Arabic is written from right to left, so the words are shown and typed in that direction.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
