English Typing Test
Check how fast you can type in English. The test shows the 200 most common English words in random order, so you spend your minute typing, not reading. Type as many as you can and you will see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Because the words are short and familiar, this test measures your raw keyboard skill. It is the standard test for comparing your speed with friends, classmates or colleagues, and the one most typing requirements are based on.

Typing English on a QWERTY keyboard
Almost every keyboard in Pakistan uses the QWERTY layout, named after the first six letters on the top row. Touch typists rest their fingers on the home row: the left hand on A, S, D and F and the right hand on J, K, L and the semicolon. Most keyboards have small bumps on F and J so you can find the home row without looking.
Each finger is responsible for one column of keys. If you learn the right finger for every key, your hands barely move and your speed grows with practice. Looking at the keyboard is the habit that holds most people back.
English typing speed for jobs and exams
Many office jobs in Pakistan include a typing test, from data entry and call-centre roles to clerk and assistant posts in government departments. The required speed varies by post, so always check the job advertisement. Regular one-minute tests here are a simple way to track your progress before the real test.
Tips to type faster in English
- Keep your eyes on the screen, not on your hands.
- Accuracy first: a wrong word does not count towards your WPM, so slowing down slightly often raises your score.
- Read one word ahead while typing the current one.
- Practise for a few minutes every day rather than one long session a week.
- When the common words feel easy, move on to the advanced test with the top 1000 words.
How the typing test works
- Click the input box and start typing the highlighted word. The timer starts with your first key.
- Press the space bar to move to the next word. Correct words turn green, wrong words turn red.
- When the time is up, your result appears. Press the restart button to try again with new words.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good English typing speed?
- Most people type between 35 and 45 WPM. 50–70 WPM is good for office work, and professional typists usually reach 80 WPM or more.
- Are capital letters and punctuation included?
- No. The normal test uses common lowercase words (and the word I) without punctuation, so you can focus on speed. To practise capitals and punctuation, try Text Practice with real sentences.
- Is the English typing test free?
- Yes. The test is completely free and works on any computer or phone with a keyboard. Create a free account if you want to save your results and appear in the rankings.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
