Russian Typing Test
Тест скорости печати на русском языке
Check how fast you can type in Russian. The test shows 200 common Russian words, such as не, на, что and он, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Russian is the most widely spoken Slavic language and is typed on the ЙЦУКЕН layout, named after its first six letters. The test writes е instead of ё, as most everyday Russian text does.
Typing Russian on your keyboard
The standard Russian layout (ЙЦУКЕН) comes with every operating system. A phonetic layout (ЯВЕРТЫ) that puts letters on similar-sounding Latin keys is also available, but fast typists use ЙЦУКЕН.
On Windows 11, add Russian under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ш and щ, ь and ъ, и and й.
- е is used instead of ё, as in еще and черный.
- Similar-looking words: что and чтобы, его and ее.
Tips to type Russian faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Russian text.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to type ё?
- No. Words are written with е, as in most Russian text, so you never need the ё key.
- Can I use a phonetic Russian keyboard?
- Yes. Any layout that types Russian letters works.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
