Dutch Typing Test
Typtest in het Nederlands
Check how fast you can type in Dutch. The test shows 200 common Dutch words, such as het, een, van and dat, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders) and Suriname. The common words use almost no accents, so a Dutch test is mostly about speed and spotting the many short words like de, het and een.
Typing Dutch on your keyboard
In the Netherlands most people type on the US keyboard (often the US-International layout), while Belgium uses the Belgian AZERTY layout. The test works with both.
On Windows 11, add Dutch under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ij is written as i + j: mijn, tijd, zijn.
- Double vowels change the word: man and maan, ben and been.
- Short words like de, het, en and een appear often and are easy to mix up when typing fast.
Tips to type Dutch faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Dutch text.

Frequently asked questions
- Should I use QWERTY or AZERTY for Dutch?
- Use the layout you are used to. In the Netherlands that is usually QWERTY, in Belgium AZERTY.
- Do I need to type accents?
- Hardly ever. The common Dutch words in this test do not use accents.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
