Norwegian Typing Test
Skrivehastighetstest på norsk
Check how fast you can type in Norwegian. The test shows 200 common Norwegian words, such as det, til, som and for, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Norwegian has two written standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk. This test uses Bokmål, which most Norwegians write. Its extra letters æ, ø and å come at the end of the alphabet.
Typing Norwegian on your keyboard
The Norwegian keyboard has å next to P and ø and æ next to L. Danish keyboards look the same, but with æ and ø swapped.
On Windows 11, add Norwegian under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ø and o: øye, dør and grønn need ø.
- å and a: på, år and gå need å.
- Bokmål spellings, not Nynorsk: ikke rather than ikkje.
Tips to type Norwegian faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Norwegian text.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the test in Bokmål or Nynorsk?
- It uses Bokmål. Many common words are spelled differently in Nynorsk.
- Can I use a Danish or Swedish keyboard?
- A Danish layout swaps æ and ø, and a Swedish one has ä and ö instead. The Norwegian layout is best.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
