Estonian Typing Test
Eesti keele trükkimiskiiruse test
Check how fast you can type in Estonian. The test shows 200 common Estonian words, such as see, oli, mis and kui, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Estonian is spoken by about one million people and is related to Finnish. It has four extra vowels, õ, ä, ö and ü, and long words built from smaller ones.
Typing Estonian on your keyboard
The Estonian keyboard has õ, ä, ö and ü on their own keys to the right of the letters, so you can type them without dead keys.
On Windows 11, add Estonian under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- õ is a separate vowel from ö: õde, sõber and kõik use õ.
- Double vowels and consonants change the word: kool, linn and palju.
- ä and ü, as in väga and üks.
Tips to type Estonian faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Estonian text.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between õ and ö?
- They are different vowels with different sounds, so the test treats them as different letters.
- Can I use a Finnish keyboard?
- It has ä and ö but no õ or ü in easy places. The Estonian layout is better.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
