Finnish Typing Test
Kirjoitusnopeustesti suomeksi
Check how fast you can type in Finnish. The test shows 200 common Finnish words, such as että, oli, hän and mutta, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Finnish words can be long and use many double letters, which makes them a good workout for accuracy. ä and ö are among the most common letters.
Typing Finnish on your keyboard
Finland uses the Finnish-Swedish keyboard, with ä and ö on their own keys to the right of L, and å next to P.
On Windows 11, add Finnish under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ä and a, ö and o are different vowels: päivä, työ and yö.
- Double letters change the meaning: tuli and tuuli, kuka and kukka.
- Long words built from several parts, such as kaupunki and ensimmäinen.
Tips to type Finnish faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Finnish text.

Frequently asked questions
- Why do Finnish words have so many double letters?
- Vowel and consonant length change the meaning of a word, so they are written twice. The test counts a missing double letter as a mistake.
- Can I use a Swedish keyboard?
- Yes. The Finnish and Swedish layouts are the same.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
