Latvian Typing Test
Rakstīšanas ātruma tests latviešu valodā
Check how fast you can type in Latvian. The test shows 200 common Latvian words, such as par, kas, bet and tas, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Latvian is spoken by about two million people. It marks long vowels with a macron (ā, ē, ī, ū) and soft consonants with a comma (ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ), and also uses č, š and ž.
Typing Latvian on your keyboard
Most Latvians use the Latvian (QWERTY) layout, where an apostrophe key or AltGr turns a letter into its long or soft form: ' then a gives ā. A separate standard Latvian layout puts every letter on its own key.
On Windows 11, add Latvian under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- Long vowels are part of the spelling: māja, ūdens and pēc all need a macron.
- Soft consonants such as ļ, ņ and ķ, as in ļoti and ķermenis.
- ģ in ģimene.
Tips to type Latvian faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Latvian text.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I type ā and ļ quickly?
- On the Latvian (QWERTY) layout, press the apostrophe and then the letter, or hold AltGr while typing it.
- Does a missing macron make the word wrong?
- Yes. Vowel length is part of Latvian spelling, so the test counts it.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
