Traditional Chinese Typing Test
中文打字速度測驗
Check how fast you can type in Traditional Chinese. The test shows 200 common Traditional Chinese words, such as 我們, 你們, 他們 and 這個, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Traditional Chinese is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. The test shows common words such as 我們, 什麼 and 時候 and frequent single characters, in traditional characters.
Typing Traditional Chinese on your keyboard
In Taiwan most people type with Zhuyin (Bopomofo), using the symbols printed on Taiwanese keyboards. In Hong Kong, Cangjie and Quick are common. Pinyin input methods can also type traditional characters.
On Windows 11, add Traditional Chinese under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Typing Chinese with an input method
Chinese is typed through an input method (IME), usually pinyin: type the pronunciation, for example nihao, pick 你好 from the suggestions, and press space to move to the next word. While you choose, the letters stay in the input box; the test only checks the characters you commit.
WPM counts characters divided by five, so Chinese scores are much lower than English scores even for fast typists. Compare your result with other Chinese typists in the rankings rather than with English speeds.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- Traditional forms, not simplified: 們, 這, 說.
- Characters with the same sound: 的, 得 and 地; 在 and 再.
- Taiwan forms such as 裡 and 台灣.
Tips to type Traditional Chinese faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Traditional Chinese text.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I use pinyin for Traditional Chinese?
- Yes, as long as your input method is set to traditional characters. The test checks the characters you commit, not how you typed them.
- Does space pick a character or move to the next word?
- While suggestions are shown, space picks one. Once the characters are committed, space moves you to the next word.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
