Icelandic Typing Test
Vélritunarpróf á íslensku
Check how fast you can type in Icelandic. The test shows 200 common Icelandic words, such as það, ekki, sem and við, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Icelandic has changed little since the Viking age and still uses the old letters þ (thorn) and ð (eth). Accented vowels such as á and ó are separate letters.
Typing Icelandic on your keyboard
The Icelandic keyboard has its own keys for þ, ð, æ and ö. Accented vowels are typed with a dead key: press ´ and then the vowel.
On Windows 11, add Icelandic under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- þ at the start of words like það and þú, ð inside words like með and við.
- á, é, í, ó, ú and ý are separate letters from a, e, i, o, u and y.
- æ and ö, as in grænn and höfuð.
Tips to type Icelandic faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Icelandic text.

Frequently asked questions
- What are þ and ð?
- Two old letters that English also used long ago. þ sounds like th in think, ð like th in this.
- Can I type Icelandic on an English keyboard?
- Not easily. Add the Icelandic layout so þ, ð and æ are one key each.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
