Esperanto Typing Test
Testo de tajpa rapido en Esperanto
Check how fast you can type in Esperanto. The test shows 200 common Esperanto words, such as kaj, estas, ili and oni, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Esperanto was created in 1887 by L. L. Zamenhof as an easy international language. It is written exactly as it is spoken, with six letters that carry a circumflex or breve: ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ and ŭ.
Typing Esperanto on your keyboard
Windows has no built-in Esperanto keyboard, so many people install a free Esperanto layout or a small typing tool. Linux and many phone keyboards include Esperanto. The test needs the real letters, not the x-system (cx, gx), so set up a layout that types ĉ and ŭ directly.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ŭ in words like ankaŭ, antaŭ and hodiaŭ.
- ĉ, as in ĉu, ĉio and ĉiam.
- The x-system (cx, sx) is not accepted: type the real letters.
Tips to type Esperanto faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Esperanto text.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I type cx or c^ instead of ĉ?
- No. The test compares the real letters, so use a keyboard layout or tool that types ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ and ŭ.
- Why is Esperanto easy to type?
- Every word is spelled exactly as it sounds and there are no silent letters, so once you know the six special letters there are few surprises.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
