Spanish Typing Test
Test de velocidad de escritura en español
Check how fast you can type in Spanish. The test shows the 200 most frequent Spanish words, such as de, que, también and después, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
Spanish uses the same letters as English plus ñ and accented vowels, so the real challenge is typing accents quickly without breaking your rhythm. This test is a good way to practise exactly that.
Typing accents and ñ
A Spanish keyboard has its own ñ key and a dead key for the acute accent: press it, then the vowel, to get á, é, í, ó or ú. On an English keyboard you have a few options:
- Windows: switch to the United States-International layout. Type ' and then a vowel for an accent, and AltGr + N for ñ.
- Mac: press Option + E and then the vowel for an accent, and Option + N and then N for ñ.
- Phones: press and hold a letter to choose its accented version.
Accents change the word
In Spanish an accent can change the meaning: esta (this) and está (is), si (if) and sí (yes), el (the) and él (he). The test counts them as different words, so a missing accent makes the word wrong, just as it would in real writing.
How the typing test works

Frequently asked questions
- Can I take the Spanish typing test on an English keyboard?
- Yes. Use the United States-International layout on Windows or the Option key shortcuts on a Mac to type accents and ñ.
- Are capital letters or ¿ and ¡ included?
- No. The test uses common lowercase words without punctuation, so you can focus on letters and accents.
- Is my Spanish speed comparable with my English speed?
- WPM is calculated the same way for every language, so the numbers are comparable. Most people are a little slower in Spanish at first because of the accents.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
