German Typing Test
Tipptest auf Deutsch
Check how fast you can type in German. The test shows 200 common German words, such as der, die, und and den, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
German capitalises every noun, so this test mixes lowercase words with capitalised ones like Zeit, Haus and Wasser, just as in real German text. ä, ö, ü and ß are part of the spelling.
Typing German on your keyboard
German keyboards use the QWERTZ layout: Z and Y are swapped compared with English, and ä, ö, ü and ß have their own keys. Switzerland uses its own QWERTZ layout without ß.
On Windows 11, add German under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- Nouns start with a capital letter: Mann, Frau, Kind.
- ß and ss: groß and Straße use ß, dass and muss use ss.
- ä, ö and ü must not be written ae, oe and ue.
Tips to type German faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every German text.

Frequently asked questions
- Why are some German words capitalised?
- German capitalises all nouns. The test keeps those capitals, so press Shift for words like Zeit and Haus.
- Can I type ae instead of ä?
- No. The test expects the real letters ä, ö, ü and ß.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
