French Typing Test
Test de vitesse de frappe en français
Check how fast you can type in French. The test shows 200 common French words, such as les, des, une and est, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
French is spoken on every continent, from France, Belgium and Switzerland to Canada and much of Africa. Accents are part of the spelling, so they count in this test.
Typing French on your keyboard
France and Belgium use the AZERTY layout, where A and Q, and Z and W are swapped compared with English, and é, è, à, ç and ù have their own keys. Canada uses the Canadian French layout, which is based on QWERTY. On an English keyboard, the United States-International layout gives you the accents with dead keys.
On Windows 11, add French under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- é, è and ê are different: été, très, être.
- à and a, où and ou: the accent changes the word.
- œ in cœur, sœur and œil.
Tips to type French faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every French text.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I type œ?
- On a Mac with an English layout, Option + Q types œ. The classic French AZERTY layout on Windows has no œ key, but the newer French standard layout does. On a phone, press and hold o.
- Are words with apostrophes included?
- No. Words like c'est and l'ami are left out, so you only type complete words and accents.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
