Hindi Typing Test
हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट – अपनी हिंदी टाइपिंग स्पीड जांचें
Measure your Hindi typing speed in Devanagari script. The test shows 200 of the most common Hindi words, such as है, और, के and नहीं, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
Hindi typing needs more than letters: vowel signs (matras), the halant and conjuncts like क्य and त्र all have to be right for a word to count. That makes it a good way to practise the details that matter in real Hindi documents.
Hindi keyboard layouts
InScript is the standard Hindi keyboard layout and is built into Windows, macOS and Linux. Vowels sit on the left of the keyboard and consonants on the right, and vowel signs are typed after the consonant they belong to. Many typists also use the older Remington layout, which follows Hindi typewriters, or phonetic tools that turn Roman letters into Devanagari.
On Windows 11, add Hindi under Settings → Time & language → Language & region and choose the keyboard you want. Switch between English and Hindi with Windows + Space.
Matras, halant and conjuncts
- Type the consonant first, then its matra: क + ि gives कि, even though the matra is drawn before the letter.
- Use the halant (्) to join consonants: क + ् + य gives क्य, as in क्या.
- ड़ and ढ़ are typed as ड or ढ with a nukta (़).
- Words are written the way most modern Hindi text writes them, for example यहां and आंख with a bindu (ं).
Hindi typing for government exams
Many government jobs in India, such as clerk, data entry and stenographer posts, include a Hindi typing skill test. The allowed layouts, the font and the required speed differ between exams, so check your exam's notice. Short daily tests here help you build speed and accuracy before the exam.
How the typing test works
- Click the input box and start typing the highlighted word. The timer starts with your first key.
- Press the space bar to move to the next word. Correct words turn green, wrong words turn red.
- When the time is up, your result appears. Press the restart button to try again with new words.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use the Remington layout for this Hindi typing test?
- Yes. The test works with any keyboard layout that types Unicode Hindi, including InScript, Remington (GAIL) and phonetic input tools.
- Why is my word marked wrong when it looks right?
- In Hindi, two words can look almost the same but use different characters, for example a bindu (ं) instead of a chandrabindu (ँ), or a missing halant. The test compares every character, so check the matras and joining signs.
- What is a good Hindi typing speed?
- Hindi speeds are usually a little lower than English speeds because many words need more key presses. Around 25–30 WPM is a common target for exams and office work. Check the Hindi rankings above to see how you compare.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
