Bulgarian Typing Test
Тест за скорост на писане на български
Check how fast you can type in Bulgarian. The test shows 200 common Bulgarian words, such as на, да, се and не, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Bulgarian was the first Slavic language written in Cyrillic, and it still uses its own set of 30 Cyrillic letters, including ъ as a full vowel.
Typing Bulgarian on your keyboard
Bulgarian typists use two main layouts. The phonetic layout puts letters on Latin keys with a similar sound (а on A, б on B), and the traditional BDS layout, the national standard, groups letters by how often they are used.
On Windows 11, add Bulgarian under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- ъ is a vowel in Bulgarian, as in съм, път and сърце.
- щ and ш, and ю and я are separate keys.
- Bulgarian has no ы or э; if your layout types them, you are using a Russian keyboard.
Tips to type Bulgarian faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Bulgarian text.

Frequently asked questions
- Phonetic or BDS: which Bulgarian layout is better?
- Both work for this test. Phonetic is easier if you already type English; BDS is the official standard and is common in offices and schools.
- Can I use a Russian keyboard?
- It is not ideal: the Russian layout puts some letters in different places and adds letters Bulgarian does not use. Add a Bulgarian layout instead.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
