Malagasy Typing Test
Check how fast you can type in Malagasy. The test shows 200 common Malagasy words, such as ary, dia, amin'ny and tsy, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Malagasy is the national language of Madagascar. It uses the Latin alphabet without c, q, u, w or x, and many words are long, with repeated syllables and the apostrophe in forms like amin'ny.
Typing Malagasy on your keyboard
Malagasy is typed on a standard French AZERTY or English QWERTY keyboard without any special letters. The apostrophe in words like amin'ny and alohan'ny is part of the word.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- The apostrophe in amin'ny, aorian'ny and alohan'ny.
- Final -y in words like ary, any and tany, where many languages would write -i.
- Long words such as mpampianatra and tendrombohitra.
Tips to type Malagasy faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Malagasy text.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a special keyboard for Malagasy?
- No. Every letter is on a normal French or English keyboard.
- Do I type the apostrophe?
- Yes. In words like amin'ny the apostrophe is part of the spelling, so type it as you see it.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
