Japanese Typing Test
日本語タイピングテスト
Check how fast you can type in Japanese. The test shows 200 common Japanese words, such as あなた, 彼女, 私たち and 彼ら, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Japanese mixes three scripts: kanji, hiragana and katakana. The test shows words the way they are normally written, such as 食べる, ありがとう and コーヒー, so you practise converting with your input method as well as typing.
Typing Japanese on your keyboard
Most people type Japanese in romaji with the Microsoft IME on Windows or the built-in input method on macOS: switch to hiragana input, type the reading in Latin letters and convert. Some typists use kana input, where each key types a kana directly.
On Windows 11, add Japanese under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Typing Japanese with an input method
Japanese is typed through an input method (IME), usually in romaji: type the reading, for example taberu, press space to convert it to 食べる, press Enter to confirm, then press space to move on. The test only checks the text you confirm, not the letters you type while converting.
WPM counts characters divided by five, and Japanese words are only a few characters long, so Japanese scores are much lower than English scores. Compare your result with other Japanese typists in the rankings.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- Pick the right kanji: 書く and 描く are both read kaku.
- Long vowels in katakana use ー, as in コーヒー and ゲーム.
- Small kana such as ゃ, ゅ, ょ and っ, typed for example as kya or with a double consonant (matte → 待って).
Tips to type Japanese faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Japanese text.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I move to the next word in Japanese?
- Convert and confirm the word with Enter, then press space. With the Japanese IME on, space types a full-width space, which also moves you on.
- Can I type in kana input instead of romaji?
- Yes. The test only checks the text you confirm, so romaji and kana input both work.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
