Simplified Chinese Typing Test
中文打字速度测试
Check how fast you can type in Simplified Chinese. The test shows 200 common Simplified Chinese words, such as 我们, 你们, 他们 and 这个, in random order. Type as many as you can in one minute and see your speed in words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how many words you got right.
Simplified Chinese is used in mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. The test shows common words such as 我们, 什么 and 时候 as well as frequent single characters, in simplified characters.
Typing Simplified Chinese on your keyboard
Most people type Chinese with a pinyin input method: Microsoft Pinyin on Windows, the built-in pinyin input on macOS, or phone keyboards such as Gboard and Sogou. Wubi and other shape-based methods also work.
On Windows 11, add Simplified Chinese under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between keyboards with Windows + Space.
Typing Chinese with an input method
Chinese is typed through an input method (IME), usually pinyin: type the pronunciation, for example nihao, pick 你好 from the suggestions, and press space to move to the next word. While you choose, the letters stay in the input box; the test only checks the characters you commit.
WPM counts characters divided by five, so Chinese scores are much lower than English scores even for fast typists. Compare your result with other Chinese typists in the rankings rather than with English speeds.
Letters to watch
The test compares every character, so these often make a word wrong:
- Choose the right character: 的, 得 and 地 are all de.
- Simplified forms, not traditional: 们, not 們.
- Some words are one character, others two or more; press space after each.
Tips to type Simplified Chinese faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen: the current word turns red as soon as you make a mistake.
- Accuracy first. Wrong words do not count towards your WPM.
- Practise for a few minutes every day. The 200 words in this test appear in almost every Simplified Chinese text.

Frequently asked questions
- Does space pick a character or move to the next word?
- While the input method shows suggestions, space picks the first one. Once the characters are committed, space moves you to the next word.
- Can I use Wubi instead of pinyin?
- Yes. The test only checks the characters you commit, so any Chinese input method works.
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- Every correctly typed word counts its characters plus the space after it. That number is divided by 5 (the length of an average word) and by the test time in minutes. Wrong words do not count towards your speed.
- What is accuracy?
- Accuracy is the share of all the keys you pressed that were correct. Typos you fixed with backspace still lower your accuracy, so it shows how cleanly you type.
